For now I only fish freshwater for trout, so here's my ultimate trout
assortment:

-tiny creeks to medium rivers-
        6 1/2' full-flex 2 wt - dries and nymphs
        9' mid-flex 4wt - streamers

-medium to large rivers-
        6 1/2' full-flex 2 wt - small dries (#22 baetis to #10 stimulator or
hopper)
9' mid-flex 4 wt - larger dries and nymph rigs
9' medium-fast 5 wt (wish list) - streamers and heavy nymphs where longer
casts are required

-lakes-
        9' mid-flex 4wt - all applications

I currently own the 6 1/2' 2 wt (Orvis 1 oz.) and the 9' 4 wt (Cortland
GRF-1000). I'm happy with both rods - some day I'll likely replace the
Cortland by building my own on a St. Croix blank. The Orvis 1 oz. is
awesome though - it's set up with a Sage 3100 loaded with their new Quiet
Taper line - when fishing dries over short distances I feel like every cast
is a dream come true. The drag on that reel sings a beautiful tune - it's
the only reel I've owned that I've never cussed out.

The only thing I ever find myself wanting for is a fast, or perhaps a
medium-fast 5 wt. rod for those situations on the Yakima when the w*** is
blowing or I just can't get the distance I need out of my 4 wt.

-tight lines-

Great discussion topic!
I would agree to most of them except I would feel a little undergunned with
only 3's and 4's for your trout rod. I am probably not as good a caster as
you but I find myself reaching for the 5's and 6's for eastern Washington
trout, not because they are so big (but there are some dandies) but because
of the 4 letter word that starts with a W. (Don't say it out loud, it might
start blowing). What were the instructions to create that floss blow line?
(grin).
