i have a bunch of size 10 chironomid pupae that I tied on curved shank Umqua hooks.  The hooks seem to straighten quite easily.  drives me nuts.

Subject: Re: Umpqua, TIEMCO Hooks[Scanned]

About 2 years ago I began having problems with the big fish at Rocky Ford straightening or breaking off #18 nymph hooks at the bend. At first I thought my switch to fluorocarbon line was permitting me to put excessive pressure on the hooks, but I compared the older and newer hooks thru numerous hookups and was convinced there was a difference in the quality of the steel. I contacted Cabelas, where I had purchased the new hooks and they put me in touch with Umpqua. I sent a variety of samples of both hooks to demonstrate the problem and they said they sent them to the manufacturer. They swore there was no difference, but I am sure there was. They persuaded me to go to a sturdier and much more expensive hook and it has worked fine (sorry I don't have hook numbers handy). Umpqua sent me a bunch of free hooks and flies as an apology, so that was nice, but I suspect the manufacturer isn't going to redo their hook making process because of my complaint.
