A couple guys in my winter fly tying group introduced me to Dai
Riki hooks. Available at Avid Angler, they're perhaps the best
'budget' line of hooks I've yet tried.

I think you may just have got a bad batch; hate to throw out the baby with the bathwater...daiichi are good hooks though.
