The GMUG Computer Showcase 2003 will soon be upon us and I have
committed today to email our members, friends, supporters and sponsors
to finalise our planning. Below is a copy of a publicity release for
your information.
We hope to build on what has happened in the past, making particular
use of the special features of the Western Australian Museum -
Geraldton, under the patronage of Regional Manager Adam Wolfe and
Education Officer Mary Callaghan. Mary in particular would like to see
some workshops run that would encourage teachers and others to use the
Museum facilities and resources more.
GMUG members had an exciting iChat last Friday night involving members
from BeiMac, the Beijing Mac Users Group. It eventuated that we had
participants from Australia, China, Japan, Bolivia, Spain and Canada.
We even had a 'visit' from Su Xinmin from Apple China. It was more like
an iConference! At the Showcase, we plan to conduct an iChat AV
videoconference with several overseas forums. The most powerful one,
perhaps, will be with the members of BeiMac, live from Joe's Bar, near
Tianamen. Hopefully this will also involve children in a two way
cultural interchange.
Members of this mailing list are invited to visit sunny Geraldton on
the weekend of October 18-19 to enjoy some great Mid West hospitality,
and to visit the Computer Showcase. We have booked the Boatshed
Restaurant again for dinner on the evening of Friday 17th for all
members, presenters, sponsors and friends. Social activities for the
Saturday evening have yet to be finalised.

GMUG COMPUTER SHOWCASE 2003
This year at the
Western Australian Museum - Geraldton
Situated at the new Marina
Saturday October 18
10am - 3.30pm
GMUG, the Geraldton Macintosh User Group, is a volunteer non-profit
organisation located in the City of Geraldton, bringing together people
from the Mid West and beyond who have an interest in Apple Computers,
in a forum of collegiate, professional and social interaction. Our
membership includes a wide range of home users, business and
professional people, educators and students alike.
For the past two years GMUG has organised and run an extremely
successful Computer Showcase, a free interactive public event
demonstrating some of the best information and learning technologies
available in Australia. This year the Computer Showcase will be held at
the Western Australian Museum - Geraldton, on Saturday 18th October,
coinciding with the beginning of Education Week. A major emphasis will
be on teacher, student and community education, demonstrating the links
between technology, education, community and heritage. Using state of
the art technology, we are planning an exciting range of free
interactive experiences. One of the most powerful is planned to be a
live iChat AV video-conference link-up with the people of Beijing, and
other people around the world, demonstrating the simplicity and
excellence of modern communication technologies.
In addition there will be interactive displays and workshops by
Geraldton's Yamaji News newspaper; Chapman Valley Primary School staff
and students; Holland Street School staff and students; Northampton
teacher, artist and talented quilter Jude Tupman; Steven Tan, Webmaster
of Central College of TAFE; local high school student Christian Kotz
with his working timeline of the history of computers (Apple of
course), and numerous other local members.
The Showcase will also present workshops by Brett Clarke and Mark
Stevens from ECAWA - Educational Computing Association of WA; Bryn
Jones, Senior Lecturer at Notre Dame University; Jan Clarke -
Claymation and digital movie specialist; Karl Videmanis - Apple
Education Manager, and Rod Miller - DigiLife AppleCentre Mt Hawthorn
Consultant. Mark is also ECAWA's 2002 Educator of the Year and Brett
and Bryn are recognised as Apple Distinguished Educators.
Further details will be posted to you soon, in particular there will be
an expansion of the topics to be covered in the workshops and
'show-and-tell' sessions. The day truly promises to be a fantastic,
not-to-be-missed, fun learning experience. Mark it on your calendar now!
