A 256MB RAM ($99) should suffice for what you want to do.
Yes RAM prices have basically doubled in the time you quote although
they have come down around 10-15% in the last month or so. The RAM you
are chasing has increased in price in this period.
Though prices move up and down marginally each week, what we are
currently experiencing is a relatively stable price for most RAM
products.
We will continue to see RAM for the older Macs slowly increase as
production for these modules is wound right back. A generalisation but
RAM for the G5's is already about 5% cheaper than the older G4's
despite it being twice the G4 price when the G5's were introduced. You
can expect this gap to continue to widen over the next few months.
Take some heart though, RAM for an older iMac (tray load) is now $183
for a 256MB DIMM or about double the price for the equivalent RAM for a
G5.
