We will continue to see RAM for the older Macs slowly increase as
production for these modules is wound right back. A generalisation but
RAM for the G5's is already about 5% cheaper than the older G4's despite
it being twice the G4 price when the G5's were introduced. You can
expect this gap to continue to widen over the next few months.
Yeah - PC100 and PC133 are no longer being used in new systems, so it's
not being made in such volumes and prices are rising. Oh well. DDR is
cheaper now than PC133 ever got, and no doubt DDR2 will be more so when
it becomes the mainstream memory format.
If you're going to upgrade the RAM in a system, the best time seems to
be when the memory type it takes is just being replaced in the
mainstream by a new format - ie buy PC133 when DDR goes mainstream. You
may not need the RAM now, but you probably will later if you plan to
keep using the machine - and as you've noticed, obsolete memory formats
cost more.
The most basic speed grade of DDR RAM, is currently somewhat more
expensive than the same size PC133:
Hyundai 512Mb PC2700 $129.00
Hyundai 512mb PC133 $149.00
but the difference isn't massive. Both do seem to have gone up in price
in recent months.
