flash drive had to re-formatted

Repairing preferences didn't work. Just inserting it in a windows 
machine, or in fact saving files to it didn't work. I had to re-format 
it in the windows machine.
Grrr!! But now at least it shows up on the desktop on my mac (tho' not 
in finder!) Why not?
