In my experience there's just not much to be done about it. Too much
broken mail software out there, and some folks (like Microsoft) don't
seem to be in a hurry to fix theirs, either.
I remember this to be the case.
While we used 9 this issue persisted and we simply opened files from
within the chosen application.
In nature diversity is strength, not too sure if that applies to email
technology though...
