Hey guys;

You know what this is, we have been using OS X for so long we forget the little tricks of OS 9 and before, the generic Icon and the missing application message is an indication of a need to rebuild the desktop. You remember, hold down the command and option keys at startup and let the desktop rebuild at the message. The desktop file keeps the association between the documents and a the application, when that becomes corrupt or just old or because the document version is newer than then application version, thats what happens, rebuilding will resolve it just fine.

I know you guys thought I wasn't coming back there after I was at the September Meeting (by the way I had a great time and really like talking to Matthew and his father), but we are still working on out immigration issues, man the Australian Computer Society is really picky about their paper work

Hi All

I wondered if anyone has come across this before.
I have a client running Mac OS 9.2.2 with all the updates. It is a 500Mhz G3
iMac, running 9.2.2, Office 2001 v9.0.5, Entourage for email.
When the client gets some .doc or .pdf files they don't always open when you double click them. But it's not all types, and it's not all from the same person. When you drop them onto the desktop they have the standard "plain white, "who do I belong to?" Icon". Again if you double click it, they won't
open. It just says,..can't find an application to translate. File
Translation is turned on and setup. I trashed the preference for File
Transfer and set it up again, but no joy.
Now the weird part,...
If you open the Word file from within Word, it opens. If you have it, it makes no difference. But if you to File Menu, Choose "Version", Click "Save now" and OK, it save correctly to the desktop , with the correct icon and
then works like normal from there on it.
The same for pdf's and "Save a Copy". It works then.

Also when you first open the "version Box" there isn't anything listed
there, but after running the "Save Now" you get information in the "Existing
Version" tab on this screen.
She is also having trouble downloading some pdf's from sites as well.

TO me it sounds like the resource fork or meta-data isn't being transferred properly when it's being received into the email,..but I could be wrong! :o)

So I don't know if this makes sense to anyone, or anyone has come across
something similar,...but any help greatfuly appreciated and accepted!

Thanks and Enjoy!

Kind Regards
Daniel
