Its one of those things. Apple has sold millions of them, but you only ever
hear of the bad stories :-) It would be awesome if they were all perfect,
but they are not. Still the best MP3 player on the market!

yeh I admit that I seem to be the one who scored the duds but hey that seems to be my life at the moment with gadgets... litany of problems like batteries lasting 15 minutes, hard disks that died then the last "new" one never worked properly straight out of the box (screen would not display information properly and the back light was far to bright - actually hurt to look at it) maybe I was somewhat abusive to the retailer and service guy when I took it back a few hours later after it's first charge - they couldn't replicate the problem (turned out to be intermittent) and few weeks later got in to an argument when I went back when it was playing up again and they say that I'd dropped it (showed me dent in metal around remote jack) so damage not covered under warranty - but I hadn't even plugged the remote in to it and knew I hadn't dropped it.

I seem to hear a lot about these things failing one way or another
which makes me wonder about their reliability. Are the as good as they
look or just a piece of good looking junk?
