this is were I shoot my self down in flames......

the iMacs arround and just after the "5 flavours" era (so yours would probably 
fall in to
that) have 
a Apple PlainTalk mic jack 

this  uses Apple's own "PlainTalk"  condenser mic this uses a special  slightly 
longer
mini pin that 
powers the mic
 (Condenser mics have a charged plate so require a  power supply) 

as such you would need to locate one here on WAMUG or e-bay

I can have alook through our dungeon of obsolete equipment at work and I might 
find one
you 
can have for only the effort of picking it up from UWA.
