Their are programs to assist with the mathematics if necessary. But
if you are not proficient with this ideology I would suggest adding
raw (unencoded) files ie dv into DVDSP and if you guess wrong it is
very easy to modify and quicker to re-encode than have to rebuild
mpegs then rebuild your output in DVDSP. Also if you set DVDSP up
correctly most times it will build mpegs, vobs etc. while you are
designing your DvD hence less compiling-rendering time when it comes
time to Build, Format and Burn your DvD.
Does it strike anyone else as bizarre that in 2005 we are manually
calculating bit-rates and your ability to successfully author a DVD
depends on your ability to do this calculation?
Extremely, and the weird thing is you can get the calculation on the
side of safety. Still get errors when building as I have found out
their are various computations again pending on your file formats,
compression program and which way your tongue is hanging when start is
pushed. This does not take into consideration levels or very fancy
menus with video or animated icons. It is not restricted to DVDSP
either it has happened many times even on proprietary DvD authoring
systems, reminds me of a book title "They're a Weird Mob" by Nino
Culetto (John O'Grady).
I suppose this is why Apple with DVDSP 3 added the advantage of
importing raw (unencoded) assets, then construct your DvD around
relevant assets. Also if you happen to configure all the preference
files it will start to encode in the background whilst you are
designing and constructing said DvD.
