Do the updates come directly from the Update Software facility? If
they do, yes, I have. I have also reset the base station but as yet I
haven't had it reconfigured from scratch. I would have to get the
techo out again to do that. :( I'm only a mere designer.

I can rule out the card in the laptop not working properly because I
have another mac with a card installed that does the exact same thing
as the laptop (i.e. when the laptop is not connecting, that computer
is not connecting, when the laptop has a fuzzy signal, the computer
has a fuzzy signal). Both computers get there signal from the
Airport Extreme base station and normally they are both about 3
metres from it.
Have you installed the Airport Firmware updates?
I'd also try poking its reset button and reconfiguring it from scratch.
