I can rule out the card in the laptop not working properly because I
have another mac with a card installed that does the exact same thing
as the laptop (i.e. when the laptop is not connecting, that computer is
not connecting, when the laptop has a fuzzy signal, the computer has a
fuzzy signal). Both computers get there signal from the Airport
Extreme base station and normally they are both about 3 metres from it.

Well, it could be the airport card in the laptop... Anecdotal evidence
seems to indicate that sometimes the antenna connections come loose.
Also, try turning on 'interference robustness', but if it's not
working a metre away then I'd guess something is broken.
