Hi all! Samsung has introduced a Serial ATA II hard disk drive boasting twice the speed of SATA I hard drives. The drives, available in 80, 120 & 160GB versions run at 3GB per second (300MB data rate on the bus), spin at 7200rpm and have an 8.9 millisecond average seek time and an 8MB cache buffer. The drives also feature Native Command Queuing (NCQ) allowing the drives to multitask.
The NCQ feature has been available in SCSI based products for some time, and may be the key in prompting users to switch from SATA I to II. NCQ will allow the drive to accept a queue of commands like bringing up 5 blocks of data, and put them in the appropriate order. The drives are approximately half the cost of SCSI making them extremely price attractive as well. No doubt the technology will gradually make its way across to other manufacturers and eventually into PC's. In the last few day Apple has released iTunes 4.8. It includes new Music Store features and support for transferring contacts and calendars from your computer to your iPod (requires Mac OS X version 10.4 on your computer). If your version hasn't been updated from 'Software update' you can grab it from here: <http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/> Heard about Tiger? Well of course you have!
