What's a 'sandbox' machine? :-)
it's a "play" machine that you use for learning and testing
configurations and software, it holds no production or personal data,
and you can scrub out/format/reinstall it if you stuff up (and
sometimes you're deliberately trying to stuff up its configuration
just to see what goes wrong so you know how to recognise and fix the
problem when/if you see it "in the wild")
Someone once suggested to me the term was borrowed from bomb disposal
parlance.
Unexploded bombs are placed inside "Sandboxes" while they are manually
(safely?) defused.
These days though I think they prefer to use remote control devices,
probably for the best really ;)
I too have heard encouraging things about Ubuntu.
