You're probably more likely to find folks who can answer this on the
Perth Linux User Group mailing list (http://plug.linux.org.au for
subscription, etc).

I've heard about Fedora/PPC, Ubuntu/PPC, and of course Yellow Dog. I
have no experience with any of them.

I'd recommend steering clear of Gentoo unless you like to get into the
very fiddly bits. You'd need to be very patient to use it on a 500MHz
machine, too.
