How did you manage that Kev ?
I have advised every person that has asked me to buy a Mac.
So far every one of them has bought a Windoze PC, then come to me for assistance. I swore after the last one that I would say NO to any assistance, but how can you do that to friends and family.

My mother (who is 85 years old) has decided that her old Windows machine (that is so old it struggles with Windows 98) is getting too old so she wants to upgrade. I took her to Digilife in Mt Hawthorn this morning and now she is going to think about it. However my brother has already told her that a Mac would be much too difficult for her, "It's a specialist machine".

I already know what is going to happen. I shudder to think of her trying to cope with the vagaries of an XP interface.

I don't believe this group encompasses Mr and Mrs Joe Average, who buy many more computers than us enthusiasts. I really only work with the Averages and their PCs and I can tell you they don't even want to know about this stuff. You try to tell them and they nod their heads but they would fail a questionnaire soon after ;)

I have to agree completely with this. Mr and Mrs Average just know they want a computer. They don't really care which one. Sure, they'll do their research on price and feature comparisons, but this will usually involve questions like "what software comes with it?" or "Does it come with a printer?", and their first stop will usually be the Harvey Norman / Officeworks / Dick Smith. Since their choice will invariably run Windows they don't think to consider alternatives, and they just expect that that's the way all computers work. The finer details are just too confusing.

In my experience, people about to get into a computer for the first time look to a friend to ask if that friend can be their techie when they purchase. In my case, I have advised a few friends that if they want my help then they should by a Mac. They did and I am.
