I am trying to download TIFF images from British
Origins again. I had trouble with a Run Time
error back in March but eventually succeeded in
downloading using Internet Explorer with Graphic
Converter as the 'helper application'.
This time I foolishly paid a 12 month
subscription and now I can't get it to work at
all.
First I followed the instructions on the site and
downloaded Accel ViewTIFF. Accel's demo TIFF file
downloaded after I disabled QuickTime for
stationary images in Safari. When I tried to get
the British Origins image it downloaded ("image -
100% complete") but then I got an error message:
"Cannot display TIFF document (Unsupported compression mode -7)"
The same error occurred in Internet Explorer.
I contacted the Help Desk, they replied:
QUOTE
We are aware that there can be problems viewing
the 1841 census images (and some other images on
our site) with an Apple Mac. While these images
conform to an industry standard, we are as yet
aware of only one suitable viewer which works
with a Mac - XnView (see http://www.xnview.com/
for download information; note that XnView
requires the X11 enhancement to OS X).
We find it hard to understand the lack of
suitable Mac viewers, for there are many which
work with Windows (see our web page
http://www.beta.originsnetwork.com//help/popup-faqbo.htm)
Every organisation which deals with images has a
problem deciding how they should be viewed.
Ancestry decided to develop their own viewer;
other sites use proprietary image formats; we
chose to stick with industry standards, to allow
users to choose how they handled the images.
We keep looking for other Mac viewers, and hope
that some of the existing viewer suppliers will
upgrade their products appropriately.
UNQUOTE
I downloaded XnView and X11 and installed the
latter but I can't find any instructions on how
to use XnView.
I then tried to go back to using Graphic
Converter and Internet Explorer but now I have a
Run Time error again. When this happened back in
March I somehow got it to work but now I can't
remember how I did it (old age!).
I can't use XnView as a helper application in
Internet Explorer as both it and X11 have file
type = " ", file creator = "????"
If any one has any suggestions (apart from
shooting myself for wasting £22.50) I should be
very grateful.
