You can't use both ports on the modem at the same time. The PC is probably setup to authenticate using PPPoE and is connected through the USB. Your Mac is obviously setup to connect using PPPoE on the ethernet interface. It cannot detect a PPPoE server because the PC is connected. You would need to setup the modem (router?) to perform the PPPoE part and, assuming it is capable of this (you don't mention the model) perform NAT and DHCP. You could then plug it into a switch via the ethernet port and have both the PC and modem plugged into the switch via ethernet. Both machines would then need to be set to get IP address's via DHCP. If your modem is not a router then you will need to get one, there are many combination modem routers, some with a built in 4 port switch will allow you to connect up to 4 machines to the same internet connection.
It may be helpful for you to do some reading. There is much self help information on the net. Otherwise there are people on this list who setup these things for a living.
