will removing the pram battery do anything different
than zapping the pram?

if not, then it's even easier.  Just boot holding
option + apple + p + r and hold it, until you hear the
boot chime 4 times.  Four is the magic number. 
(honestly, i don't know why apple recommends four
times, but their phone support does).  Thats it...
reset your clock and you should be up and going again.
