Thank you Peter and Bob for your comments on this matter.
The Epson C67 (not a young printer), works fine in OSX.
I downloaded the OS9 driver, booted up in OS9 and installed it.
Rebooted in OSX and there it was in Classic.
All is well that ends well!

There are 5 USB ports. The age of the iMac would preclude these
from being USB 2.
The Apple System Profiler under Devices and Volumes just identifies
USB ports but does not say their version.
A printer I am considering purchasing - an Epson C67 wants USB 1.1
(Is this a PC thing and not to worry wrt Macs?).
However, will the printer be compatible with my iMac?

Quite simply, Yes. I cannot see any reason why anyone would
manufacture a printer restricted to USB 2.0 speeds. For one thing,
it would crush their potential market share, and for another it
would unnecessarily increase their cost of production. Printers,
especially little consumer inkjets, do not need to operate at USB
2.0 speeds. USB 1 is perfectly fine, so you will find that pretty
much any USB printer you buy will be backwards-compatible with USB
1, even though its specs might say USB 2.0.
