Power Point woes

I have been given a power point presentation that my Microsoft Office 
98 version of power point attempts to open and then quits.  The 
presentation's name has a suffix of .ppt.
Looking at other PP presentations that I have received and 
successfully opened I notice the suffix is .pps
Have I encountered a feral file?
