OK Mark,

Bearing in mind I always bullshit best when not hampered by any knowledge of
the facts :)

Perhaps it has to do with the image numbering rational:

 - presumably the camera automatically assigns sequentially increasing image
numbers and previously didn't care if they were RAW or JPG eg img00001.cr2,
img00002.jpg, img00003.jpg, img00004.cr2 etc

 - when you choose to shoot simultaneous RAW & JPG, does it change to giving
each version of the shot the same number (but different extension) eg
_mg000001.cr2 & _mg000001.jpg then _mg000002.cr2 & _mg000002.jpg in which
case it would maybe start a new numbering system and add the extra digit to
distinguish from the previous image numbers.

(Just trying to think like a dumb camera!)

Of course, I could be hypothesising through my fundamental orifice!
