Just wondering if someone can please give me a brief overview of what I need
to do and turn on or download in order to transfer files from a G4 17"
Powerbook running 10.4.8, to a Windows XP desktop. The Windows machine isn't
wireless enabled as far as I know, so I presume I would connect them with
ethernet cable?
Yep, Ethernet cable.
More specifically it may need to be a crossover Ethernet cable as
opposed to a 'straight' or 'patch' but increasingly 'normal' Ethernet cable.
Crossover is for computer to computer, normal is for computer to
hub/switch/router(modem[not dial up])*
Make each one have the right IP addresses for this job ie 192.168.0.x
for yours and then
192.168.0.y for the XP desktop. (x and y must be two different numbers
that are between (but not including) 1 and 255)
Then in XP, click on 'start' then 'Run', a dialogue will appear.
Type in the following:
\\192.168.0.x (of course use the number you chose for your's and not 'x' :)
If all has gone well you'll be asked for the username and password for
your Powerbook.
When it connects to the Powerbook navigate to your files and then copy
them to the XP desktop's..... er... desktop ;-)
Good luck
Paul
BTW there is at least another half a dozen ways to do this :-)
