ethernet cable?

Yep, Ethernet cable.
More specifically it may need to be a crossover Ethernet cable as opposed to a 'straight' or 'patch' but increasingly 'normal' Ethernet cable. Crossover is for computer to computer, normal is for computer to hub/switch/router(modem[not dial up])*

Powerbooks do not need crossover, they will work with straight ethernet. One assumes this is true with MacBook and Pro, not sure as do not own one.

Does that mean if one end 'auto senses' like you say with the Powerbook that's all that is needed?
In other words the PC will not need this ability too?

Thinks to self: if one ends wiring is 'crossed over' by either me or the computer its a crossover cable! Hmmm. :-)
