Many thanks to Jo, David and Paul.  I keep forgetting to try the Pram 
zap.   I did get it to function after talking rather sternly to it 
and hitting it with TechTool Pro and Yasu.  TechTool reported that 
the network was fine.
 I don't know which did it...probably the tongue lashing.   Once I 
set it up at my friend's place I will zap the pram to be doubly sure.

I have read quite a few conflicting reports about the validity of 
zapping the Pram, but in the past have had success solving some 
problems by doing it.
