Are there any downsides to backing up to / storing Mac data on the
windows platform? I've never had issues in the past when sharing data
on a mixed network.
Cheers, Antony.
Hi Antony,
Given that the Mac is a BSD/unix derivitive I would like to think that
you are much better off installing Linux on this fileserver. Not only
will you have greater stability and security, but you have a much
greater number of options as far as mounting the remote filesystem such
as NFS, samba or even appletalk.
I understand that Linux is a little daunting for the first time user,
however with newer distributions out there they are becoming easier and
eaier to use (I would recommend using one with a GUI interface such as
Ubuntu.
We share and store many files in cross platform setup here without too
many issues. None major.
One that comes to mind is illegal characters in your file names. As you
used some in your email I thought I should pipe-up ;-)
\ / : * ? " < > |
None of the above can be used, the most common offender being the slash
/
Users are often inclined to use a slash in file names and indeed Mac OS
will not complain, but characters like this will cause issues and the
symptoms aren't always obvious.
One word of advice would be 'Gigabit Ethernet'. Thats two I know, so
shoot me ;-)
Good luck
