I am not 100% sure on the kernel specifics for Mac OS X, however I would consider myself to be an expert on Linux and although the drive may boot by simply swapping them, the kernel would have been setup to be a single processor kernel and you won't get the benefit from your second processor.
I am not sure if there is a way to simply replace the kernel in OS X.
