I suspect my daughter may have tinkered, but she won't admit it. Argh!
Are there any other suggestions, or can someone lend me a system

CD please to try to get the machine running again?
There seems to be a little inconsistency here. If the computer is
showing a "Sad Mac" at startup then it seems it is trying to boot into
Mac OS 9 or earlier, not Mac OS X. Have you tried holding down the
Option key at startup? This will show any alternative boot folders
available to you. The normal way for Mac OS X to display a bad boot
folder is to display a circle with a diagonal line through it in place
of the Apple logo at startup.
