There seems to be a little inconsistency here. If the computer is
showing a "Sad Mac" at startup then it seems it is trying to boot
into
Mac OS 9 or earlier, not Mac OS X. Have you tried holding down the
Option key at startup? This will show any alternative boot folders
available to you. The normal way for Mac OS X to display a bad boot
folder is to display a circle with a diagonal line through it in
place
of the Apple logo at startup.
I could be wrong but I believe an 'OS9' looking unhappy face just
indicates it is an earlier(ish) model as my G4 powermac would do the
same if it lost OS X for any reason.
I've been through the nasty experience of a non-booting G4. My own G4
400 (circa 2000) lost its brains once and displayed only the Mac OS X
bad boot logo, not the Classic Sad Mac, even though there was a fully
operational MacOS 9 System Folder on the drive.
