Thanks for that Ronnie, after reformatting and verifying, it still
isn't seen by Time Machine
By that I mean .. after ejecting and connecting the drive via USB
(have to login then it appears in Finder), then going to System Prefs/
Time Machine and clicking Choose Backup Disk, the external drive isn't
seen by Time Machine.
I still have to log in to the drive, and I'm thinking that is perhaps
the problem.

Hi Glenn,
Have you tried using Disk Utility to Erase the Drive and format the
drive 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' and then see if Time Machine
recognises it.
