Hi Glenn,
Sorry for not replying sooner I've just got back in.
Before trying to use an external drive for Time Machine backup, you
should repartition it, using Apple Partition Map for a PowerPC Mac and
GUID partition scheme for an Intel Mac, but not Master Boot Record. It
is not enough to erase the content of the existing partitions; you
need to repartition so that the new partitioning scheme is installed
on the disk as a whole.
GUID partition scheme is only useful for Intel based Macs, but I have
my External Drive partitioned as 'Apple Partition Map' on a Intel
MacBook Pro & it works fine in Time Machine.
After partitioning, make sure the volume is formatted as Mac OS
Extended (Journaled).
Avoid special characters in volume names on the backup drive. You
should limit the name to A-Za-z0-9 characters.
Use of other characters as well as spaces could result in problems.
Cheers,
Ronni

Thanks for that Ronnie, after reformatting and verifying, it still
isn't seen by Time Machine
By that I mean .. after ejecting and connecting the drive via USB
(have to login then it appears in Finder), then going to System
Prefs/Time Machine and clicking Choose Backup Disk, the external
drive isn't seen by Time Machine.
I still have to log in to the drive, and I'm thinking that is
perhaps the problem.

Hi Wamug, I've got a 250Gb Lacie Ethernet Disk Mini 10/100, and I'd
like to use it for Time Machine.
This disk was originally setup to allow log on via a network (its
original purpose). But now I just want to use it as an external
drive via USB.
When I plug it in to the USB port, it appears in Finder and I can
log in. But Time Machine doesn't recognise it as a valid external
drive.
After hitting a few brick walls, can anyone illuminate me:
- Can I use this disk for Time Machine?
- If I can but I need to set it up as an external USB drive rather
than a network drive (with login), how do I do this?
After checking the manual and using the install CD for the disk, I
can't find any references to setting it up as a USB disk. So maybe
it only operates as a network drive.
Hi Glenn,
Have you tried using Disk Utility to Erase the Drive and format the
drive 'Mac OS Extended (Journaled)' and then see if Time Machine
recognises it.
Cheers,
Ronni
