Hi Peter,
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried those, but they turn off ALL
sound. I still want to be able to use my earphones (I mainly do
music things on my iMac), but I just want to stop he initial startup
chord.
With thanks ... Clyde

Hi,
I've recently converted to Apple and now the proud owner of an
iMac.
I often do work during the night, and was wondering if there is
someway to stop the 'startup chord' as it wakes others up.
I have earphones plugged in, but somehow this chord still seems
to bypass them and sounds through the speakers.
Is there someway I can turn it off or turn it down?
Go to System Preferences > Sound and move the Output volume slide
to the left until you reach th volume you want. Alternatively,
click the Mute checkbox on the same screen to turn off the sound
completely.
