Hi Peter,
Thanks for the suggestions. I tried those, but they turn off ALL sound. I still want to be able to use my earphones (I mainly do music things on my iMac), but I just want to stop he initial startup chord.

  With thanks ... Clyde

OK, I admit defeat on this one. I just tried restarting my iMac with headphones plugged in, and sure enough the startup chime came through the speakers loud and clear. This is a NEW behaviour. It's time to go in search of an Apple Technote for this one. Perhaps someone else will find the answer faster than me...Ronnie? Anyone? :-)

Hang in there Clyde
