To all those that replied to my request for assistance, a very humble
apology for taking so long to say 'Thank you'! No creative excuses
unfortunately, just very slack!
I shall address each reply below:
Eugene & Mark: As suggested, I downloaded 'Graphics Converter' and was
extremely pleased to find that I was able to successfully open the
problem .tif files and save them in another format.
Bob: I am using OS X 10.5.3 and Preview 4.1. Thank you for the offer
of attempting to open one of the files for me but as I now have a
solution there is no need for me to waste any more of your time.
Ronni: As per your suggestion, I did rename a number of my .tif files
to .tiff but regardless of the file extension, Preview was unable to
open any of them and I continued to receive the same error message.
Interestingly though, when I use the search feature in Finder to list
all .tif files, they are all already categorised as .TIFF files in the
'Kind' column? Thank you for your reply though and for all of the
other information that you so regularly contribute to the group.
Bob: I had no problem viewing your two images, both in Mail and with
Preview. Thank you for your reply.
Kind regards,
David Ring.

David,

I am however surprised that Preview doesn't do it. Perhaps it uses a
compressor that is not supported by the Mac?

I have recently converted from a Windows PC to my first Mac. I have
managed to successfully transfer all of the necessary files (eg
personal files, photos etc) from my PC to my Mac however I am now
having difficulty viewing one particular file format. I utilised
the "Microsoft Office Document Imaging" software on my PC to
capture scanned document images, which were saved with a .tif
extension. When I try to open these files on my Mac using Preview I
get the following message "Couldn’t open the file. It may be
corrupt or a file format that Preview doesn’t recognise."
In an attempt to determine if the files had been corrupted in the
transfer process, I transferred a number of the files back to my PC
and successfully opened them. The file sizes have remained unchanged.
I would appreciate any advice regarding the steps I need to take in
order to view these files on my Mac.
Kind regards,
David Ring.
