If you are running Gmail (or Google Apps for your Gmail), Google does virus scanning automatically, for free. In which case a standard anti-virus programme (that scans email) is irrelevant.
I use Little Snitch. In their words: "A firewall protects your computer against unwanted guests from the Internet. But who protects your private data from being sent out? Little Snitch does!" For any request to send data from your computer, you get an alert. You can approve or deny it, temporarily or permanently. It is very simple and convenient. This takes care of many of the theoretical problems that might arise if your computer was compromised. In practice, it is a good way of knowing what programs 'phone home'.
