Hi again Walter,

I forgot to remind you that if you do have to Rebuild the iPhoto Library it will take quite a long time to complete.

Ok Walter,

If you do have to Rebuild your iPhoto Library, you will require approx. 20GB free space leaving you only 8GB left on your HD.

Before we think about whether it will be worth updating iPhoto to perhaps iPhoto 6 or iPhoto 7 ('08) (as you don't have a very large HD). First I would like to get your current iPhoto Library functioning if we can.

Please do this and let me know the result.
1. Quit iPhoto (if it is open)
2. Go to Home > Library > Preferences Folder and find "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" 4. Drag the "com.apple.iPhoto.plist" file to the Trash (don't empty the trash just yet)
5. Open iPhoto

If it works, DON'T do my next instruction:

If you still get the same error message, QUIT iPhoto and then try to rebuild the Library. 1. Rebuild the photo database by starting iPhoto while holding the shift+option keys. 2. Don't release them until you're prompted to confirm the intent to rebuild.
3. Click "Yes", then click "Save".

Cheers,
Ronni

Hi Walter,

1. iPhoto 2.0.1 with this iPhoto Library was working on this iBook prior to what?
GOOD QUESTION. I CAN'T SAY THAT THERE WERE ANY EVENTS.
When you first received the message "You can't open your current iPhoto library using this version of iPhoto" etc, what had you done recently to your computer or iPhoto? AGAIN, I'M NOT AWARE OF ANY ACTIVITIES AFFECTING iPHOTO OR ANYTHING ELSE.

2. Your iPhoto Library is 9.3GB in size, is this the size it was before you encountered this problem? I NEVER CHECKED THE SIZE OF THE iPHOTO LIBRARY BEFORE - I DON'T KNOW. 3. How much FREE space do you have on the iBook's HD? To rebuild your iPhoto Library you need free space equal to the size of your current iPhoto Library, otherwise the rebuild will not complete.
28GB OF THE 60GB ARE AVAILABLE.
4. Do you have a backup of your iPhoto Library on an external drive or disk? NO - I TRIED TO PLACE A COPY ON THE EXT. HD BUT IT ONLY WENT TO THE "PREPARING TO ETC." STAGE AND THE NEXT MORNING
IT WAS STILL ONLY PREPARING AND I COULD NOT SHUT THE IBOOK DOWN, I HAD TO TURN IT OFF WITH THE POWER SWITCH.
Why you are unable to install iLife 04 is because you cannot install an "older" version over a "newer" version. You already have iPhoto version 2.0.1, the Install disc will be version 2.0. You can install a newer version of iLife, i.e iLife 05, 06, 08, or iLife 09 (if your iBook meets the specifications).
I TRIED ILIFE 09 BUT IT REFUSED BECAUSE ITS NOT ON LEOPARD.
I have iLife 05, 06, & 08, which I no longer require if you want I could post to you.
IF YOU THINK THAT WOULD RESOLVE THE SITUATION I WOULD LIKE TO TRY IT.

Thanks,

Walter

Let me know the answers to the above questions before I can help you more.

Thanks Ronni,

No, the iMac I used for a donor of iPhoto also runs with Tiger and has never been leopardized. I used a USB stick to transfer it. Prior to that I tried to re-install iLife 04 and although the installation went through all the normal steps and was apparently successful I could not find iPhoto or iLife 04 not even searching in spotlight. The iBook only shows one 9.3GB iPhoto library in home / pictures. I can try to find the original installation disc that came with the iBook - if iPhoto is on that one and install iPhoto from that disc. Should I do that ?

Photo libraries from other iPhoto versions have never been installed on the iBook - only the updates that
come via software update from Apple were installed.

Thanks,

Walter

Hi Walter,

A couple of things are worrying me here.

1. Had you moved, or copied, any iPhoto Library folders from another (newer) version of iPhoto?

2. When you say you "Have trashed iPhoto from the applications and installed iPhoto again (Version 2.0.1) from another G4 iMac".
How did you install iPhoto 2.0.1 from the G4 iMac?
Looking back through the WAMUG Archives, doesn't your G4 iMac have Leopard installed on it? iPhoto 2.0.1 is not compatible with Leopard.

iPhoto 2 is different to newer versions of iPhoto and needs to be installed from the Restore Disks that came with your computer.
You can't just drag the Application from another computer.

3. In your Home folder > Pictures, do you have only ONE iPhoto Library folder?

Hi Ronni,

Have done the rebuild. At the end of that process the same alert came up again before I tried to open iPhoto. Then, I tried to start iPhoto and the "You can't open" alert comes up preventimg iPhoto
from starting.

Thanks,

Walter

Hi guys,

I can't open iPhoto.

When I try to open iPhoto it responds :
"You can't open your current photo library using this version of iPhoto"

It suggests that I have made changes to the Ph/library and wants me to upgrade to a newer version.

I have only ever changed the version when an upgrade was released and was downloaded from the Apple site and then - as far as I can remember - the photo library was also upgraded.

Have trashed iPhoto from the applications and installed iPhoto again (Version 2.0.1) from another G4 iMac but
that has not changed anything.
Have looked at the download site for newer versions, but can only see versions for Leopard.

I'm using an iBook G4 + OS 10.4.11

Looking for some useful hints.

Hi Walter,

If you haven't copied any iPhoto Library folders from another (newer) version, then your photo library likely has some minor corruption. 1. Rebuild the photo database by starting iPhoto while holding the shift+option keys. 2. Don't release them until you're prompted to confirm the intent to rebuild.
3. Click "Yes", then click "Save".

Let us know if that corrects your problem please.

Cheers,
Ronni
