Hi Brian,

First, if the computer isn't showing in the sidebare, go to the finder
preferences and in the sidebar pane make sure you have got the shared
options (eg connected servers) ticked.

Another way to connect, if the computer isn't showing in the sidebar, is to go to the finder "GO" menu and select "Connect to Server" when you get the
dialog box then:

1) The other computer may be showing under the favourites or recent servers
(then select and click "Connect") - or

2) Try clicking the "Browse" button to see if the other computer shows up
(then select and click "Connect") - or

3) If browse isn't working try directly inputting the server address of the
other computer directly and then clicking "Connect"

I've tried "Connect to Server" from the Finder "GO" on both PB & iMAC

In fact I tried this a while ago, the PB is called "Brian Scott's Computer (2)" the iMAC the same without the (2) after the name,

In case there were difficulties with the spaces I selected the Edit button and renamed the PB fred and the iMAB fred2

But still no joy.

I've tried entering the addresses of each such as afp://192.168.1.2 in "Connect to Server" plus as afp://fred.local or just fred2.local
depending on which computer I'm trying it on.

Entering the address as a number 192.. etc. makes it try for a bit longer than using say fred.local.

When I tried from the iMAC to connect to the PB (using afp://fred.local) the initial msg I got was "Connection failed The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again" (I get the same when trying from the PB)

then the small "Connecting to Server" window showed ..

"The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in 'afp://fred.local' could not be read or written. (error code - 36)"

What's annoying is some other computer near here is showing up in "Choose a recent Server" which automatically appeared out of no where into the Finder and I couldn't get rid of it until I Re-Started the PB.

Selecting "Browse" just opens an empty Network browser window.

To check the server address of either computer go to the "Network" pane of their System Preferences (you can also see the address in the "Sharing" pane
of the System Preferences).
Done that

Also remember that even when you are connected for sharing, you actual file
access will depend on:

- Whether you are connected as the same user
- Whether you are connected as an administrator
- Which folders you have shared
Fact is I not sure what I"m connected as, how does one find out?

I created the network on the iMAC setting a WEP PW and connected to the network with the PB.

Sorry should have mentioned: in Sharing/File Sharing/Shared Folders I have my Public Folder set for Read & Write for myself

Try the above and, if still having problems, report back with any error
messages from step 3 above.

The other thing to do to isolate whether the problem is with your wireless network or sharing set-up is to directly connect the two machines and check that the sharing is all working OK over ethernet (since one of the machines
is a laptop this should be easy).

I've done that recently when using the PB with a film scanner in the same room as the iMAC. I had the PB connected to my 4 port hub to get access with the iMAC to the HDD connected to the PB where the scanned pics were going No problems arose. The PB showed up in the Finder sidebar and it connected when I clicked on it.

Thanks

Brian

Hi,

I've created an AirPort WEP network in the hope of exchanging some
files between my 2 computers i.e.

PowerBook G4, OS 10.4.11

and

iMac Intel, OS 10.5.8

but the remote computers aren't showing up in Finder.

I've done this successfully once before a couple of months ago but
there seems to be a crucial step that I've forgotten.

I have File Sharing turned on in both computers and the network I
created is showing connected in their AirPort drop down menus.

What else do I need to do to copy files from one to another?

They are about 25 feet apart & virtually in line of sight of each
other.

AirPort status on the PB is showing 'computer-to-computer' on the
iMAC 'On'.

Thanks

Brian

Hi Brian,

A couple of things you could check.
1. In Finder > Preferences - General. Do you have selected under
"Show these items on the Desktop"... "Connected Servers" ?
Yes

2. In System Preferences > Sharing - File Sharing click on the
options button & do you have "Using AFP" selected?
and Yes

I seem to remember the remote computer showed up in the side bar of
the Finder and I needed to click Connect is this correct?

Cheers,
Ronni
