Hi James,

You can get the total amount of disk used by folder using Terminal :

polaris:~ alex$ du -sh *
2.6G    Downloads
...
polaris:~ alex$ cd Downloads/
polaris:Downloads alex$ du -sh *
548K    About Downloads.pdf
2.5G    iphone_sdk_3.1.2_with_xcode_3.2.1__snow_leopard__10m2003.dmg
...
polaris:Downloads alex$

As you can see my downloads folder holds 2.6GB out of which 2.5GB are made up 
of the iPhone SDK.

Maybe a little technical using Terminal commands, but at least you don't have 
to install any new software.
