Got a bit further, set up some new sub mail boxes, but when trying
get incoming emails to go directly, they do not. I goind to tinker
with the filter settings.

Right-clicking on the mailbox pane at the left of the normal TB
screen will enable you to create new folders and mailboxes.

I'm on Thunderbird 3 at the moment so it may be in a different

It is EASY using Mail but I have spent a few hours trying this
with Thunderbird with no success.
