just a week or so ago i had a talk about a similar problem, try to
use a external!!!!(power pack) powered usb hub, harddrives suck alot
of power when the motor has to spin up from start or sleep
my recomendation is not to power harddisk, scanners & other power
hungry gadgets from the usb port, because the power from a usb port
is limited
the error message points to that problem, it's not unmounting - it's
in fact disconnected based on power failure or in rare cases plug
connection problems
