Maybe I am wrong as I don't actually use Bento (but there are others
on this list who know heaps about it)
I was under the impression that Bento uses the underlying DB engine of
Address Book so you would import into Address Book first of all and do
your fine tuning in Bento
You could of course allocate the Address Book entries to predefined
Groups in AB after searching by criteria like Company name, suburb etc
Have you considered the possibilities of creating Smart Groups in
Address Book where you can search by a number of criteria?
As Tim suggested you could probably achieve a lot of your refinement
in the way you handled the fields in the csv file you initially
exported from Palm Desktop, renaming them if necessary to match AB
fields.
You also have some flexibility in defining AB fields.
There is a script out there somewhere that allows you to export vCards
to a csv file if you want to play with your data in a spreadsheet.

Standard OSX Address Book works fine for me Lloyd.
Try exporting your Palm contacts into a csv file - tab and return -
then
using Address Book import function, align the fields and import them.
I have a similar number of contacts as you.
Address book does not allow the same variety of view layouts but at
least
you have a programme that integrates easily into Mail and iCal apps
