We've got a mac mini permanently connected to our TV - but for several years prior to acquiring the mini we just hooked up one or other of our laptops for the majority of our viewing. Even broadcast TV we usually time-shift using an EyeTV usb tuner.
DVDs for me are just a format for rentals and delivery of purchases (not that I've any plans to ditch my box-sets of movie franchises any time soon :) I'd buy more tv episodes digitally if the DRM was less intrusive. FWIW the air's external optical drive works a treat - it's also a handy region-free external for our mini to play the DVDs we bought in the UK.
