All good points Daniel. It's always good policy to hang back for a little while
to see what implications for others of such a major upgrade have been. We who
have been around Macs for so long have been through it all before: the change
from 68000 to Power PC, the move to Mac OS X, the change to Intel - all have
present their own shares of heartache and pain for a period of months (and some
times years) following the change, and there are some fondly-remembered classic
software packages from years gone by whose like we will never see again, but
that's the price of progress, and Apple have become the masters of change.
Already, the new version of Final Cut Pro is being met with howls of protest in
some quarters, especially by those who have replced their existing versions
with the new one without taking proper precautions.
Fortunately, the precautions available these are days are inexpensive and safe.
Just invest in an external hard drive (it's hard to find them smaller than 500
Mb any more), clone your computer over to using Carbon Copy Cloner (free) and
install Lion onto the clone. You can then boot into the clone for evaluation
purposes and to test all your important software. This gives you plenty of time
to wait for bug fixes, third party software updates, etc, and still explore the
new features without compromising your important working machine.
AppleWorks will be the main problem for most people, I would think. The
following mix of software will take care of most problems, I would think:
AppleWorks WP files - will open in Pages (iWork)
AppleWorks Spreadsheet files - will open in Numbers (iWork)
AppleWorks Database files - export as text files and open with Bento
(www.filemaker.com)
AppleWorks Drawing files - Open with Intaglio
(http://www.purgatorydesign.com/Intaglio/) or Eazydraw
(http://www.eazydraw.com/ - NOT the App Store version)
AppleWorks Presentation files - will open in Keynote (iWork)
