Hi Paul,

When you moved the Envelope Index to the Trash and then opened Mail, did you 
allow it to complete recreating your envelope index? If you did not that could 
explain the 'beach ball' spinning.

Without knowing how you have setup your gmail account on the Web and  in Mail 
it is difficult to reply to your question.

Are you using POP or IMAP access?  
With POP access, the read/unread flags will not synchronise.  
With IMAP, they synchronise automatically, when the client connects to the 
server.
