I certainly won't disagree with you Re: Bigpond, I never recommend Bigpond to 
my clients, family or friends.
That said though, have you upgraded the Firmware on the Netcomm 3G21WB?

The Telstra Elite Modem (Netcomm 3G21WB) has a known issue with certain 
firmware versions which prevents these modems from automatically selecting the 
external antenna. 
The good news is that a firmware update is available that allows you to 
manually select the external antenna in the web interface of the modem. If you 
experience problems, please Download the upgrade from Netcomm Support
