Hi Alex, In your situation, as your IT have said, make sure you have the latest Java installed. And all security updates. I think this is the latest Java Update for OS X 10.6.8 - Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 11 <http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1573>
I would believe that your work are using HOBLink Secure.
