Hi Daniel, I feel a twit, I just was back tracking in my head and remembered I have my itunes library backed up on another internal hard drive. When I checked this hard drive it was virtually full. I have deleted a number of files and now itunes works okay. I am so sorry to have wasted your time and thank you for your suggestions.
