Hi Rosemary,

Did your husband upgrade from ‘Snow Leopard’? If so it was probably on his Snow 
Leopard system before he upgraded to Yosemite.
The “Previous System Folder" was made during re-installations of Mac OS X. 
They contain all that needed to be saved in case your new install went wrong.

I haven’t seen it happen in later OS X upgrade installations.
